This piece was created for Loss of Innocence a special exhibition and reception at the Attleboro Arts Museum inspired by Harper Lee's novel "To Kill A Mockingbird."

A nest is a place to nurture the beginning of a new life, and for a short time it is also the total physical universe of that growing life.  A young man named Charlie, who has never truly experienced this protection and safety, inspired the creation of this nest.  In many ways I wanted the materials that built this nest to demonstrate the strength and perseverance that Charlie maintains each day.  Just like the nearly unbreakable piston rod that supports this nest, Charlie is a survivor who is working towards a bright future.

Sitting within the center of the nest are two eggs, one to represent Charlie and one to represent Charlie’s Aunt, his only stable caregiver, who is now falling ill and the roles of caregiver are reversing for Charlie.  I want Charlie to know that each egg is wrapped in small illustrative drawings to encourage his dream of finishing high school and then to pursue a career in the arts.  It has been a privilege to peak into the life of this extraordinary young man.
