This was my fifth year creating the illustrations for Attleboro's Community Read. To Kill a Mockingbird was the 2012 chosen text, and I was thrilled to take on the challenge of building a drawing for this much awaited novel. The focus of the drawing is on two of the book's main characters, Scout and Jem. Between the two figures is a symbolic representation of Boo Radley's tree. Irony was the key component between the two figures, in particular to illustrate Jem's loss of innocence (as he looks away from the viewer) versus Scouts unshakable faith in humanity (as she stares straight at the viewer).
