Since 2007, The Attleboro Arts Museum has been an active partner in the City of Attleboro’s Community Read. This year Attleboro will be reading True Grit by Charles Portis – a much-loved American classic. Readers of this book are presented with a dynamic frontier story, legendary characters, and complex adventures. Throughout the novel the reader finds several examples of the symbiotic relationship between a True Grit character and his or her horse. In more than one instance, the life and well being of each depends on the other. Horses are portrayed as the working partners of the main characters, but Charles Portis also vividly demonstrates a pure and simple bond that cannot be ignored.
In response to the protagonist Mattie’s relationship with her horse, Little Blackie, and her relentless search for her father’s murderer – and lost horse Judy – the Attleboro Arts Museum presents an invitational exhibition entitled Horse Sense: Honoring the Strength, Impact, Companionship, and Powerful Work of the Horse.
